A total of 11,080 birds in South Korea have died of avian influenza while another 140,620 susceptible birds have been destroyed, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reported on February 10. Eleven different outbreaks of avian influenza in South Korea have been reported since January 17.

To date, the avian influenza outbreaks have affected breeding chickens, meat chickens, breeding ducks and meat ducks.

None of the avian influenza outbreaks have yet been reported as resolved. The source of the infection is yet to be determined, and veterinary authorities are still implementing epidemiological surveys.

Control measures applied include stamping out, quarantine, movement control inside the country, zoning, disinfection of infected establishments and control of wildlife reservoirs.
