New markets helped Brazil’s egg sector to raise its latest monthly exports by 12 percent

Total exports of eggs (fresh and processed) from Brazil were 1,800 metric tons (mt) in February 2016 - 12.1 percent higher than the same month last year, according to the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). Revenue was almost 11 percent higher in local currency at BRR2.3 million (US$635,000).

For the year so far, exports were around 5 percent lower than in 2015 in volume at 4,060 mt and 11 percent down in foreign exchange value at US$4.8 million.

The main destination for Brazilian eggs is the Middle East, with the United Arab Emirates the leading market (3,047 mt), followed by Saudi Arabia (108 mt).

In Asia, Japan has recently started egg exports from Brazil and is now the second most important destination, taking 570.6 mt in the first two months of this year.

“New markets such as Japan and Bahrain have increased their purchases, indicating that there is room to grow this year,” said Ricardo Santin, vice president of the poultry sector of ABPA.
